I have two comments. First, with regard to hijacking a thread to a guitar-related but different subject, it makes the archives less helpful since if you are searching by topic, alot is not found. The mimf (which has its own issues) is very good about keeping different subjects separate.

Second, while there is no reason for all topics to be sterile and devoid of humor, there have been several topics lately that have veered totally off into inanity. For myself, once it goes in that direction, it stops me from going back to look at the topic again to see if the thread has returned to the original subject since I don't want to waste my time.

Just my two cents worth.

Stephen has a solid point here, i agree that a thread should not be hijacked with insanities but not deprived totally of good smile or grin. I must admit that some of us will go to great lengths to make people laugh and that there is a time and a place for everything and for insanities, there is the off topic section.

So, just in case i embarked on insanities with any of my collegues in the main discussion forum, i will no doubt offer my apologies to whom i've offended but i do try to respect the topic and be serious along with those who are about the craft.

Best regards

Serge

I just want to reiterate SStallings' and Coe's points about making the forum the most useful in terms of finding the topics and information one is most interested in. If a topic is hijacked, one of the effects of that is that a new discussion can take place that might be very useful but is not indicated at all in the topic heading. It would be much better, IMHO, if a new topic were started so that others can quickly see what is being discussed. I'm sure I'm not alone in that I don't have time to read the vast majority of threads or posts. I get online and quickly skim the topic headings for stuff I might be looking for or that I might be able to help with. "Buried" stuff is usually lost on me.

On a closely related subject (dubiously mentioned here instead of posting a new topic on this, I know    ), I wish everybody would make the headings of their topics clearly state what the topic is. Headings like "need help" or "guess what happened to me today" are very common and give us zero information about what the topic actually is. That's frustrating to me.

It is a bit annoying when the thread takes a turn into non-guitar related things, I agree. I search the archives pretty regular looking for new ideas, testing my approach, or just to find a better mouse trap for something or an area that I might struggle some. If a discussion takes place about frets and evolves into fingerboard radiusing or jigs etc, I think that is adding to the information. However, if it moves to the number of pancakes required to cover a dog house, then it ends for me. I do try and stick with them until the question or situation posed is answered on most. I am very interested in what the "masters" or highly experienced builders have to say, and I have seen over the past year them have a legitimate comment that is then funned with a little that could upset folks.

I visit the "off topic" and would hope that in the future more of these kind of interesting subjects or humor could or would move to that section.

My 2 cents worth

Mike
